Otumfour Osei Tutu II, planting a tree at the Royal Golf Club

Across the length and breadth of Kumasi on Friday 11th June, 2021, individuals, schools and organizations turned up in their numbers to green Kumasi.

The national exercise with the theme: “Forest Landscape Restoration, Planting 5million Trees in a Day” received massive support and enthusiasm in the Kumasi metropolis.

Leading the exercise was the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II, who planted a commemorative tree at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.

Other high-profile personalities who took part in the exercise included the Ashanti Regional Minister, Deputy Minister Designate (Ministry of Lands & Natural Resources), Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi (Mayor of Kumasi), Military Commanders, Regional Police Commander, among others.

The exercise, which coincided with the Sixteenth birthday of the daughter of the Asantehene, Ohemaa Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem Osei Tutu, saw her also planting one tree at the Royal Golf Club.

Interacting with some school children who were invited to witness the occasion, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II educated them on the need to plant trees and protect the environment, saying “as young as you are, you should know the importance of trees around us so that you can protect them and the environment”.

Hon. Benito Owusu Bio, the Deputy Minister designate for Lands and Natural Resources in a brief speech said it was important to involve the youth in the tree planting exercise to inculcate the habit to protect and preserve trees.

Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, the Mayor of Kumasi also called on the media to come on board in the education and sensitization of the importance of planting and protecting trees.

Earlier, an organization by name SPARTANS donated 250 wooden cages to the KMA to protect the new trees being planted in the metropolis.
