Kumasi Marks Ghana's 60th Independence Anniversary

Kumasi metropolis on Monday 6th March 2017 celebrated Ghana's 60th Independence anniversary at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.

A colourful parade of security services comprising the Army,Police, Ghana National Fire Service, Prisons Service, Immigration, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority as well as students from selected Junior and Senior High Schools within the Kumasi metro, marked the occasion which was attended by the Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, who was also the reviewing officer of the parade.



Also present were the Metro Co-ordinating Director, Mr.Michael Ataogye, the Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei  Mensah - Bonsu, the AshantiRegional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party , Mr, Bernard Antwi - Boasiako, Bantamahene Baffour Asare  Owusu Amankwatia VI, some Members of Parliament of the Kumasi Metropolis , regional security heads, traditional leaders, the clergy, regional heads of department,headmasters and headmistresses, head teachers and members of the public.

The army and police band were in attendance.

In his   anniversary address read for him by the regional minister, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo- Addo recounted events which led to Ghana's Independence on 6th March 1957 and paid homage to a number of distinguished Ghanaian forebears and patriots whose hard work and sacrifice made Ghana's march to independence possible.

He, however, stated that the economic dividend that was meant to accompany the county's freedom has still not materialized lamenting that "after sixty years, we have run out of excuses and it is time to set Ghana to rights and get our country to where it should be".

President Akuffo - Addo said the challenge was to build the economy and generate a prosperous, progressive and dignified life for the mass of Ghanaians.

He therefore, called for hard work enterprise, creativity and a consistent fight against corruption in public life to bring about the needed transformation.
