The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon.Osei Assibey Antwi, and the Metro Education Directorate joined pupils from selected Basic Schools in the Kumasi Metropolis to mark the 2021 “My First Day at School” on Tuesday 19th January, 2021.

According to Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, the visit was to welcome the new entrants to the various Basic Schools and also to ensure that school authorities and pupil were adhering to the COVID-19 safety protocols.

The schools visited included Fankyenebra M/A Basic School, Kumasi Senior High Technical School (KSTS), Afia Kobi JHS, Dichemso Primary A and B, Dichemso JHS A and B,Konadu Yiadom Primary A and B, Konadu Yiadom JHS and New Tafo-Dichemso Primary.

Fankyenebra M/A Basic School received 500 pieces of nose mask while the new entrants each received a hand sanitizer and the My First Day at School Pack which contains exercise books, pencils, eraser and snack.

The Mayor and the Metro Education Directorate also donated 5 boxes and 400 pieces of Nose Mask to the Kumasi Senior High Technical School (KSTS) as part of government’s effort to reduce the spread of the deadly pandemic.

TheManhyia South Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh also donated 100 pieces of school uniforms to some schools under his constituency as part of government’s effort in promoting education in the country.

Hon.Osei Assibey Antwi, briefing the media after the visit, charged them tocontinue the education on the COVID-19 safety protocols to the communities, market women and the youth who engaged in sporting activities including football that the pandemic was no respecter of persons.

The Kumasi Mayor was however ecstatic that within a short time pupil demonstrated that they were aware of the pandemic as well as its safety protocols.

He said some teachers had even composed songs with the safety protocols so that it would easily be understood by the pupil.

My first day at school is an annual event on the academic calendar of the Ghana Education Service where new entrants are warmly welcomed to educational institutions at the basic level and also a way to motivate and improve the lives of pupils in basic schools for better education.

Ina related development, the Kumasi Senior High Technical School has benefited from the Government’s Emergency Senior High School Projects (ESHSP) earmarked to accommodate the increasing enrollment due to the Government’s Flagship programme, “Free Senior High School”.

Government has constructed 2 dormitory blocks for male and female students with each block consisting of the four houses in the school.
