Minister of Local Government inspects projects in Kumasi

    The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Alhaji Collins Dauda together with his Deputy, Hon.Kwadwo Agyekum and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. John Alexander Ackon,have inspected progress of work on redevelopment projects of the three satellite markets in the Kumasi metropolis. The projects include redevelopment of New Agogo (Atonsu) market into Southern trading centre, Old Tafo market into Northern trading centre and Asawase market into Central trading centre. These projects are being financed by Agence Francaise de Developpment(AFD) with a loan facility of Forty million Euros and Grant of a Half Million Euros under the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Project(GUMPP). The Ministers also inspected the construction of new additional cells at Oti landfill site.


    Hon. Collins Dauda, assured the people that the trading centres when completed will not be opened until all registered traders who were trading in the markets before the reconstruction of those markets have been allocated shops.


    The Minister said the purpose of his trip to Kumasi was to enable him assess the level of work and also ascertain the challenges faced by the traders.  He observed that the members of the registered traders at the markets exceeded the number of shops constructed so far.


    He, therefore directed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to engage the contractors working on the three markers to build additional stores to satisfy all the registered traders.

    He expressed satisfaction about the progress of work by the contractors and added that there was the need to provide police posts and crehe at the markets.


    The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. John Alexander Ackon on his part said the markets were selected for there development to reduce congestion within the Central Business District of Kumasi.
