Kojo Bonsu Outlines a New Vision for Kumasi
Delivering his maiden sessional address to the Assembly in Kumasi, Hon. Bonsu said as part of measures needed to provide safety and security to the people of the metropolis, he would work to procure and install CCTV cameras within the Central Business Districts and other flash points in the city to facilitate the monitoring of movement of criminals. Members of the Metro Security committee and other selected heads of Departments would also be provided with walkie talkies to enhance communication needed to promote productivity.
As part of plans to restore the green nature of the garden city, the Metro Chief Executive promised that the Assembly would plant one million trees by the end of 2017.
On sanitation, a night cleaning exercise has already been instituted within the CBDs by the mayor to ensure that business activities are conducted in a conducive marketing environment. The establishment of sanitation court to deal with environmental related offences is also currently underway. He said for the first time in the history of the Assembly, KMA would hold international conferences in Kumasi known as "Invest in Kumasi" whilst efforts would also be put in place to establish a Theme Park Afro Disney. This is an international standard theme park to attract tourists from the sub-region instead of people traveling all the way to Paris or Miami to visit the Disney Theme Park.
To this end, the MCE also used the occasion to announce the establishment of the Assembly's newspaper with the name "KUMASIANO". He said the newspaper; to be handled by the Public Relations Department would be published weekly with the sole aim of promoting the unfolding progress and events of the Assembly. He stressed that upgrading of the Assembly's web site coupled with the integration of contact information of all chairmen of the Assembly's Sub-Committees and Heads of Departments by the site would allow them quick access to upload information within their elected areas unto the site thereby promoting unity of purpose in our quest to develop the city.
On education, the mayor promised to establish Two Hundred (200) capacity Libraries in each of the nine (9) Sub Metros to boost teaching and learning. The MCE's address also captured a total of about 88 development projects being pursued by the Assembly. Some of these projects are rolled over from previous administrations. The development projects cover areas in health, education, security, road and sanitation. As contained by his speech, the new mayor would be working with staff strength of One Thousand Five Hundred and Eight (1,508) workers. Five Hundred and Eight of them are non- mechanized whilst the remaining are mechanized. Meanwhile, with the short stay of the mayor in office KMA has been put on facebook and twitter, a move, described by many as very proactive.
