RACE COURSE LORRY TERMINAL READY FOR USE
BrazilianContracta Engenharia Ltda has officially handed over a temporal lorry terminalat the Race Course to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
Thetwelve acre land was prepared and built as a terminal to temporary cater forsome transport activities to pave way for the redevelopment .
The Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Kojo Bonsu in a brief remarksexpressed appreciation to the Asantehene, Otumfou Osei Tutu II for releasingthe land for the construction of the terminal.
Mayor Bonsu was particularly grateful to H. E. thePresident, John Dramani Mahama for his interest in the project and all thestakeholders especially transport operators for their cooperation.
He was hopeful that the terminal though temporalwill help ease the traffic congestion and provide a good working environmentfor transport and other business activities within the city and pave way forthe execution of the big project, the Kejetia-Central Market Redevelopment.
He said all affected traders would be duly compensatedand relocated appropriately. He added that a date for the relocation of thetransport operators would be communicated soon.
The Project Director of Contracta Engenharia Ltda, Mr. Jorge Tavares DeAlmeida, who led the Mayor and his entourage through the 40,000 sq meter terminal,said the area was large enough to accommodate the transport operators.
The terminal has amenities such as street lights, moderntoilet facilities, bore hole to ensure constant water supply, 18 sheds, securityposts, toll booths, offices with air- conditions among others.
Mr. Jorge Tavares de Almeida, the Project Directornoted with satisfaction the good working relationship and support from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the AshantiRegional Coordinating Council and theManhyia palace.
Mr. Aeron Osei Boakye, Ashanti Regional Chairman ofGhana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) who was present at the handing overceremony expressed gratitude to the Kumasi Mayor Hon. Kojo Bonsu for ensuringthat a temporal lorry terminal to accommodate the transport operators wasprovided. He, however, called on the Mayor to ensure that adequate security wasprovided at the terminal.
