KMA SETS UP DISASTER RESPONSE TEAM

As part of efforts toforestall any unpleasant situation that may arise in Kumasi due to the currenttorrential rains and protect life and property, the Kumasi MetropolitanAssembly (KMA) at an emergency meeting of the Metro Security Council (METSEC),had taken contingency measures to solve any problem that might crop up.

It has constituted aMetro Disaster Rapid Response Team comprising; the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS), the Military, the Police Service, the National Disaster ManagementOrganization (NADMO) and the Ambulance Service to deal with any emergency.

This was contained in astatement issued in Kumasi by the Public Relations outfit for the Mayor.

The statement said theKMA had taken notice of the torrential rains which had led to heavy flooding inAccra resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties.

It said informationfrom the Meteorological Services Department indicated that there would be heavyrains across the country in the coming days.

The statement thereforereminded the public of the Assemblyâ??s bye-laws which prohibited littering inthe metropolis.

â??Residents are herebycautioned to desist from throwing garbage into the gutters and drains whichchoke the waterways and bring about floodingâ?? it said.

The KMA entreated membersof the public in the face of the rainy weather conditions to desilt gutters intheir surroundings to help prevent flooding.

The statement informedstakeholders that, drains at some of the major flood prone areas such as Kronom-Kwrapa,Atonsu-Kuwait, S-line, Ramsyer, Bremang Nkwantwuma and Atafoa had been desiltedwhile efforts were continuing to ensure that  other areas were also worked on.
