KNUST PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE INAUGURATED

A pedestrian bridge at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science andTechnology(KNUST) junction has been inaugurated at aceremony in Kumasi

The bridge which has a span of 26.5m and a minimum bridge clearance of5.5m is expected to aid pedestrians, traders, students and commuters to crossthe 4 lane dual carriageway safely and reduce crash fatalities to the minimum.

The KNUST pedestrian bridge which is disability friendly and three otherpedestrian bridge projects in Accra were funded by the Austrian Government andthe Government of Ghana at a total cost of â?¬7,600.00

In a speech to inaugurate the KNUST junction bridge, the Minister ofRoads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini,said the Government of Ghana acting throughthe Department of Urban Roads was implementing a turnkey project to constructfour pedestrian bridges at hazardous locations in Accra and KNUST junction inKumasi.

 He said M/S Wagner Biro Bridgesystem Ag was contracted to design and construct the bridges at the four sites.

According to minister, M/S Asona enterprise limited was subcontracted byWagner Biro to execute all the concrete works with Hag Consult Limited as thesub-consultant for Wagner Biro Bridge systems Ag.

Inusah Fuseini commended the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu and thetraditional authorities at Ayigya and Bomso for their role in theimplementation of the project.

He also thanked the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, the Director and staff ofthe KNUST Hospital and the police for their assistance.

He called on the Department of Urban Roads to ensure that the maintenanceof the bridge was paramount in their activities to enable the bridge serve itspurpose.

 The Mayor of Kumasi,Hon Kojo Bonsusaid the Assembly would not allow traders to sell on the bridge and thereforeentreated traders not to turn the place into a market.
