
Osei Assibey gets the nod as Kumasi mayor
Members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Friday 17th March, 2017 gave Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi the nod as Kumasi mayor.
They overwhelmingly endorsed him in an election supervised by the Ashanti Regional officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Kumasi.
Hon. Assibey pulled 132 votes out of the 133 valid votes cast with one rejected ballot representing 99.2 %
The revenue expect who worked as an Assistant Inspector of Taxes at the former Internal Revenue Service now part of the Ghana Revenue Authority also once served as the Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party from 2000 to 2008.
He was the deputy Ashanti Regional Minister during President Kufour's administration from 2006 to 2009.
The KMA has been without a substantive Chief Executive following the resignation of Kojo Bonsu last year who served as Kumasi Mayor under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
With the coming into power of New Patriotic Party (NPP) this year, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo nominated Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi for the post of the Kumasi Mayor after speculations were rife in the Kumasi metropolis that the Kumawu Wonoo indigene would be the right man for the job.
The Kumasi mayor Hon.Osei Assibey Antwi, 52, holds MBA in Marketing and is a Certified Member of the Institute of Commercial Management.
In his acceptance speech Hon. Osei Assibey pledged to unite the Assembly members in order to work towards the development of Kumasi. He gave the assurance to bring measures that would help restore the dignity of the traders in Kumasi. He also mentioned, promotion of good governance, peace building and diplomacy as some of the key areas to focus on.
The event was graced by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament in Kumasi , Nana Akwasi Agyeman, the longest - serving mayor of Kumasi to give his support to the new KMA boss, the Ashanti Regional Executives of NPP and heads of department of KMA.
