Metro Chief Executive Undertakes Inspection Tour Of Sanitation In Kumasi

The Metro Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi undertook inspection tour of sanitation in the Kumasi metropolis to have firsthand knowledge of the sanitation situation and waste management in Kumasi.
In this regard, he inspected the night cleaning exercise which the Assembly undertakes at the Central Business District (CBD) to acquaint himself with the progress of work and also to find out challenges facing the exercise to enable the Assembly to plan the way forward to help achieve best sanitation results for the Assembly and the metropolis.
It came to light during the visit to the CBD that, inadequate working equipment’s such as hand gloves, nose masks, wheelbarrows, wellington boots, and rain coats among others posed a major challenge to the operations of the night cleaners.
It was also observed that there were heaps of waste left unattended to by ZoomlionGhana Limited at Aboabo station and Kejetia Traffic light and poor lightening condition in some parts of the operational or working areas did not augur well for the night cleaning exercise.
As a first step towards addressing the sanitation situation, the Kumasi Mayor directed the Metro Co-ordinating director to initiate the process for the Assembly to procure some tricycles (Aboboyaa) to help in the collection of waste.
The Mayor also inspected the Oti engineers land fill site where solid and liquid waste are disposed off.
He tasked the waste management director to look for investors who could change the waste into some valuable use such as fertilizer or energy.
Hon. Osei Assibey also visited areas where there were heaps of refuse to be evacuated at Zion school, Asafo and Buokrom among others.

He charged Zoomlion Ghana Limited to quickly evacuate waste in these areas to ensure clean surroundings.
Members of his entourage included the Metro Co-ordinating Director, Mr.Michael Ataogye, the waste management director, Mr. John Gorke-Miah, the PresidingMember, Hon. Abraham Boadi, the Convener of Environmental Health Sub-committee, Hon. Nana Yaw Wiredu and the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Godwin Okumah Nyame.
