Petty traders endorse KMA’s clean-up campaign
The three-hour exercise was done with logistical and technical support from the Waste Management Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), was on hand to give moral support as he joined the hundreds of traders to desilt choked gutters and also evacuate some refuse dumped at unapproved sites.
The programme is coming on the heels of an initiative by the KMA to wage war against filth, and dubbed “Operation Keep the City Clean (KCC)”, which would be launched soon.
Mr. Assibey Antwi lauded the participants for their sense of patriotism, urging them to continue to be sanitation-conscious to avoid the spread of communicable diseases borne out of filth.
He also took the opportunity to entreat other stakeholders to come on board to clean the city as environmental cleanliness was a shared responsibility.
He was highly impressed with the work done by the traders, and advised residents of the metropolis not to dump refuse haphazardly.
Nana Akwasi Prempeh, Chairman of the Kejetia Petty Traders Association was worried at the disregard for sanitation bye-laws in the metropolis, and called for more education to induce an attitudinal change amongst the people.
He appealed to the KMA to endeavor to place waste bins at vantage points within the CBD to help manage waste effectively.
