KMA needs holistic approach to tackle sanitation MCE

The Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, has admitted KMA

needs a holistic approach to tackle the issue of sanitation in the Metropolis. The Mayor of the Assembly has therefore

called for the support of all residents in Kumasi for attitudinal change to help have a clean environment.

Waste management in the Kumasi Metropolis has been the bane of all the Chief Executives of the KMA. Several

strategies over the years have been adopted but due to the tonnage of waste generated, clearing and managing the

waste has not been the best. The Mayor of the KMA, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi says since assuming office,

the Assembly has been able to clear seven out of the 14 mountainous heaps of refuse in the metropolis. The Central

Business District of Adum and Kejetia where most of the waste are generated are also seeing some improvement.

Addressing members of the Assembly at the General Assembly meeting in Kumasi, Hon. Osei Assibey

disclosed that in an effort to sensitize residents on proper waste disposal, 200 National Service Personnel

to serve as Environmental Crusaders will be trained to move from homes and communities to sensitize residents to

dispose of waste properly.

"The 200 Service Personnel who will serve as sanitation crusaders will move from house to house, community to

community to educate residents on how to dispose off their waste. We believe that with these sanitation crusaders

coupled with other strategies being adopted by the Assembly, waste management will see improvement".

The Mayor also disclosed that the President is billed to officially launch  "Operation Keep the City Clean and Green" later

in the year as part of plans to ensure a clean and green environment in the Kumasi Metropolis. " Am happy to announce

that the President has given his assurance to be in Kumasi to officially launch "Operation Keep the City Clean and Green" to

show his commitment in helping Ghana have a good environment for healthy Ghanaians"
