COLLABORATE WITH KNUST TO BUILD MORE HOSTELS

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive has underscored the need for the Nigerian community in Ghana to collaborate with the authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, to build more hostels to accommodate Nigerian students who have made KNUST their preferred choice for tertiary education. Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi says there are a number of foreign students who are mostly Nigerians pursuing higher education at KNUST. However, due to accommodation challenges facing the university most of them are housed outside campus and are exposed to a number of security risks. “A lot of Nigerian students are at KNUST but because there are not enough hostels for all of them, some are in private hostels and are exposed to security risks. I want to encourage the Nigerian community in Ghana and Kumasi for that matter to collaborate with the authorities of KNUST to build more hostels so that the students can have official accommodation devoid of security challenges. The MCE was speaking during a courtesy call on him by the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Olufemi Michael Abikoye in his office at the Assembly. The deliberation touched on the cordial relationship that has existed between Ghana and Nigeria for several decades. Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi also mentioned the large number of Nigerian traders in Kumasi who have also contribution to the commercial activities in the metropolis. He stated that the laws of Ghana and for that matter the Bye Laws of KMA are not discriminatory against Nigerians as Ghanaians and Nigerians who flout the law are dealt with equally before the law. The MCE was however not happy with some female Nigerians engaged in commercial sex trade in the Metropolis and told the visiting Ambassador that the Assembly is working hand in hand with the Ashanti Regional Police Command to rid the city of such sex workers. The Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, Olufemi Michael Abikoye expressed his appreciation about the level of cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria both at the highest level of the Presidency. He said he was in the Ashanti Region to engage with the Nigerian community to stress the need for them to obey the laws of Ghana. " I admit some of my nationals have flouted some of the laws but such issues should not generate any friction between Ghana and Nigeria. Ambassador Abikoye reiterated the need for the continuous mutual understanding between Ghanaians and Nigerians for the benefit of the two countries. The Nigerian Ambassador was accompanied by some of his staff at the High Commission in Accra and some members of the Nigerian community in Kumasi.
