KMA Sanities Operations of “Aboboyaa”

As part of measures to stream line the operations of tricycles, popularly known as “Aboboyaa” for solid waste collection and disposal the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly ( KMA ) recently registered and branded all tricycles involved in the solid waste collection and disposal for easy identification and management of their activities.

Branded ORANGE and given special identification numbers, the operators of the Aboboyaa have also been given some education on the need to cover the refuse while in transit and also wear the necessary protective gear.

The measures to streamline the operations of the tricycles by the KMA come amid concerns that their haphazard operations in the metropolis and the resultant inconveniences of littering the street indiscriminately, carrying refuse uncovered and dumping of refuse at unapproved sites was worsening  the sanitation situation in the metropolis.

Speaking at the launch of the branding of the Aboboyaa, the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Mr. Kofi Adda commended the KMA for the initiative and urged other Assemblies to emulate the shining example of KMA.  

Mr. Adda noted with concern that the tricycles were used to cart solid waste and food items interchangeable, a practice which he said expose people to unnecessary health hazards and the other untold dangers.

He was happy to note that with the branding of the tricycles the general public could help by giving their solid waste only to tricycle painted orange and report others which were collecting waste without meeting the prescribed specifications. 

The Kumasi Mayor, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, said the general sanitation of the metropolis was dear to the heart of the KMA.

He said the Assembly was therefore working tirelessly to address the many challenges that confronted it in sanitation.

The Mayor said “we have a lineup of programmes all geared towards improving the aesthetics of Kumasi, chief among these is the impending “Keep Kumasi Clean & Green Campaign”
