KMA pre-launches ‘Keep Kumasi Clean and Green’ Project

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has performed the pre-launch ceremony to outdoor its flagship “Keep Kumasi Clean and Green” project, as part of activities marking this year’s World Environment Day, at the Cenotaph, Kumasi.

     The project is a bold initiative by the Assembly to ensure an integrated and comprehensive approach to tackling environmental sanitation issues in the metropolis.

     Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), stated that the objective was to restore Kumasi to its former status as the ‘Garden City of West Africa’ in order to sustain the ecology and biodiversity. 

     An implementation committee, he said, comprising civil society and religious organizations, traditional authorities and environmental youth groups had been set up to supervise the successful execution of the project.

     Their terms of reference include the supervision of the planting of trees, installation of waste bins along the principal streets and creating environmental sanitation awareness amongst the people.

     It would also be assisting the KMA to come out with innovative environmental responsive programmes for the benefit of the people.

     Mr. Assibey-Antwi observed that the Assembly had since last year planted over 10, 000 trees of varied species, including coconut and royal palm tree seedlings, especially along some principal streets and water bodies.

     This, he said, was in response to dealing with the changing climatic conditions, and explained that they were determined to resuscitate the depleting fauna and flora in the city, which brought life to the people.

He commended the Shiloh United Church International Ministry of Great Britain, Fidelity Bank Ghana Ltd, VIP Transport Ltd, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Steaman Waste Management, National Investment Bank, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Coconut Producers and Exporters Association of Ghana and the Forest Research Institute of Ghana for their donation and support of the project. He assured them that their donations will be put to good use and called for further collaboration and solid working relationship.

  Mr. Anthony Mensah, who represented the Ministerof Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr. Joseph Kofi Adda, lauded the KMA fortaking it upon itself to tidy up the city.

     Touching on the commemorationof this year’s World Environment Day, he explained that the occasion was aclarion call on the citizenry to change their attitude towards environmentalissues.

     The Ministry, he said, would besupportive of the Assembly to achieve its objectives with the requisitelogistical and technical aid to boost its campaign for a clean environment.

     Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, AshantiRegional Minister, took a swipe at those who littered the environment withimpunity, saying the government would not condone indiscipline for sanity toprevail in the Ghanaian society.

Right Reverend Osei Safo-Kantanka, the immediate pastBishop of the Kumasi Methodist Diocese who doubles as the chairman of the KeepKumasi Clean and Green Project called on religious leaders to preach onenvironmental cleanliness.
