Government gives priority to rehabilitation of Kumasi roads
Government has given approval for budget to be allocated for the rehabilitation of road networks in the Kumasi metropolis, Hon. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has disclosed.
More than 40 kilometers stretch of road, he said, would be rehabilitated in the various sub-Metropolitan areas, including Manhyia, Subin, Nhyiaeso and Bantama.
The project is to give a face-lift to the roads in order to facilitate socio-economic activities for growth of the local economy.
Hon. Assibey-Antwi, who was addressing the second ordinary meeting of the third session of the Assembly at the True Vine Hotel in Kumasi, said substantial stretch of the road network in the metropolis had been deteriorating at a fast rate.
This was affecting negatively vehicular movement and other commuters of the roads.
The meeting was to discuss development programmes of the KMA – implementation and challenges within its short and medium-term planning.
Issues lined-up for deliberation at the session bothered on revenue generation, security, environmental sanitation, waste management, the on-going decongestion exercise and infrastructural development, as well as deepening the local governance concept amongst the people.
Hon. Assibey-Antwi pointed out that with the creation of five new municipalities in the metropolis - Kwadaso, Oforikrom, Suame, Asokwa and Tafo - the KMA was under pressure to put into shape all identifiable satellite markets to meet the trading needs of residents.
Consequently, the Krofrom market project which had stalled for some years, he noted, was being given a priority attention.
In order to facilitate work on the edifice, the Assembly acting through the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) had formally written to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, as well as the Ministry of Finance to source for funds to complete the facility.
He advised Assembly-members to check the springing up of containers and other structures set up by some residents for trading purposes at unauthorized areas, saying this was a nuisance.
“You should make sure that all such illegal structures are cleared off from our pavements and other unapproved sites for sanity to prevail in the city”, he told the Assembly-members.
Hon. Assibey-Antwi stated that the Assembly had not relented in improving the street lighting system to enhance security for the safety of the people.
