KMA takes steps to complete Krofrom Market
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has indicated its intention to continue with the stalled Krofrom Market project, whose work commenced in 2008.
The facility has about two (2) thousand stores, and expected to augment trading and other commercial activities upon completion.
“The project is receiving practical attention. Management has applied through the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to the Ministries of Local Government and Rural Development and Finance, to source funding from the private sector for the completion of the project”, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, the Mayor of Kumasi, noted.
Addressing the 2nd Ordinary Meeting of the 3rd Session of the 7th Assembly at the True Vine Hotel, Kumasi, he said some prospective private sector investors were already in waiting.
Continuation of the project had become necessary, following the creation of five new municipalities out of the KMA – Kwadaso, Suame, Tafo, Oforikrom and Asokwa.
The Assembly, consequently, had been left with fewer satellite markets to facilitate commercial activities, and also enhance its revenue generation.
Mr. Assibey Antwi hinted that in order to motivate and enable the commission collectors of the Revenue Unit put in much effort for the Assembly, the authorities had proposed that their commission be increased.
This includes those at the Kumasi Central Market – with an upward adjustment from the current 18 percent to 20 per cent.
Additionally, the revenue collectors have been instructed to submit returns on daily basis in order to prevent leakages.
