
KUMASI MAYOR TOURS METRO MASS DEPOT
The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, has toured the Kumasi Depot of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) to obtain first hand information on its operations.
The fact-finding tour also enabled the Mayor to interact with the staff and management of the Depot.
Speaking after he was conducted around the yard by the Kumasi Depot Manager, Nicholas Oduro, Hon. Osei Assibey admitted that he was impressed with how the new management had properly managed the Depot.
He urged them to do more to help achieve their corporate objectives.
Hon. Osei Assibey advised the management to keep their yard clean, promising to provide them with waste bins to help improve upon the sanitation situation in the area.
He also indicated that engineers from Urban Roads Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) would be sent to the MMT yard to do an assessment of the MMT yard.
This is to identify the state of the parking yard (terminal), and put into shape areas which needed rehabilitation.
Hon. Assibey Antwi said the management shouldcollaborate with other commercial transport operators such as VVIP and STCto pick their passengers when they were in difficulty, adding that out of that they can pay some commission to them.
He said he would recommend through the Ashanti Regional Minister to the Ministry of Transport for the auctioning of the old vehicles in the yard which could be described as scrap.
Such vehicles, he observed, occupied a large portion of the yard and it was high time government disposed them to create space for new buses to have parking space.
He assured the staff that government was aware of some of the challenges that confronted them, and was working hard to improve upon their working conditions.
Mr. Nicholas Oduro, the Ashanti Regional Manager of the MMT Depot hinted that the MMT Kumasi Depot was expecting 20 new buses.
This is to increase their fleet of buses to about 83.
He commended the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo- Addo, and the entire government for providing logistical support to enhance the work of the MMT.
