VISION
The vision of the Department is to aspire to make Kumasi the cleanest metropolis in Ghana and beyond by constantly improving strategies in the delivery of waste management services.
MISSION
The mission of the Department is to keep the city clean and healthy by the provision and delivery of effective and efficient waste collection services and programmes, and environmentally acceptable disposal thereby creating an enabling environment for healthy living.
The department is strongly committed to:
- Providing customers with value-for-money services through public private partnership;
- Providing quality public sanitation facilities that ensure effective human excreta management.
- Using innovative strategies to continually provide effective and efficient services.
RANGE OF SERVICES OFFERED AND FUNCTIONS
The Department continuously and reliably offers the following key services either directly or through her agents:
- Storage, collection and sanitary disposal of waste including solid waste, industrial
- waste, health care and other hazardous waste
- Cleanse and carry out routine maintenance of drains
- Disinfection and disinfestations of premises including sanitary sites and public places
- Identify needs for public toilets
- Evacuate liquid waste from homes and public toilets
- Manage sullage disposal
- License and enforce standards on private liquid waste hauliers
- Educate the public on how to keep the local environment clean
- Handling of complaints/Feedback
- Develop and continuously update environmental sanitation plan
- Manage promotion and subsidy programmes for househould toilets
PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING TO PROVIDE SOME OF THESE SERVICES
Solid waste collection service
Procurement of solid waste collection service provider is undertaken through tendering in line with the Public Procurement Act 2003 (Act 663).
Landfill management
Procurement of Landfill Management is undertaken through tendering in line with the Public Procurement Act 2003 (Act 663).
Desludging service delivery (Cesspit emptier) and tipping at the Assembly�¢""s Feacal Sludge Treatment facility
Desludging services in the Metropolis is carried by the Department and a number of private service providers.
The following steps should be followed by private individuals and organizations seeking to engage in the delivery of desludging service.
- Submit written application to or call personally at the Waste Management Department;
- Present equipment for inspection by KMA Maintenance Engineer;
- Subsequent to certification of equipment, effect payment of an annual registration fee in line with Assembly�¢""s Fee Fixing Resolution
NB: Tipping at the Assembly�¢""s Feacal Sludge Treatment Facility attracts a tipping fee as specified in Assembly�¢""s Fee Fixing Resolution.

Septic Tank Desludging Services
- Call personally at Waste Management Department to book date for desludging service
- Pay fee specified in Assembly�¢""s Fee Fixing Resolution to the Department�¢""s Accountant.
- Service is provided within 48 hours.

Solid Waste Collection Services
Solid waste collection services are delivered under 10 Contract Lots based on the ten Sub Metro Areas in the Kumasi Metropolis. Two systems of collection are employed (i.e. House-to-house and Communal) in each of Sub Metro Areas. The house-to-house collection system attracts a fee of GHÃ?â??Ã?¢5 per 1st Class, GHÃ?â??Ã?¢4 for 2nd Class and GHÃ?â??Ã?¢3 for 3rd Class residential areas respectively. The rates are charged per bin per month. The communal collection component on the other hand attracts 10Gp per head load of waste deposited at the communal storage facility.
