Hon. Sam Pyne, the Mayor of Kumasi on Monday 11thDecember, 2023 visited some parts of the Kumasi Central Market (French-Line) to commiserate with the fire victims and also to ascertain the extent of damage caused by an inferno that swept through the French Line on Sunday December 10,2023.
After the inspection, the Mayor expressed his sympathy for the affected traders with regards to their loss and said he was glad that no life was lost in the inferno.
Hon. Pyne however debunked rumors and allegations that the fire was set by the City authorities to get rid of them to make way for the phase III of the Kejetia/Central Market redevelopment project.
He urged the traders especially those who use fire to be circumspect in their activities since the dry season has started.
He also advised them to be cautious in their trading activities and also dedicate pathways in the area for easy accessibility by the Fire Service in case there is an emergency.
The Mayor reiterated government’s commitment in completing the phase II of the Kejetia/Central Market redevelopment project and promised the traders that he will forward all their concerns to the appropriate authorities for redress, including the construction of a temporary structure to house their wares.
The various commodity leaders of the French-Line appealed to the Mayor to come to their aid and also speed up the process of completing the phase II of the Kejetia/Central Market redevelopment project.
The cause of the fire as at the time of filing this report was still not known as the Metro Fire Service were still investigating the matter.
