KUMASI MARKS 3RD EDITION OF GREEN GHANA DAY TREE PLANTING EXERCISE

As part of the tree planting initiative by the NanaAkufo-Addo led administration, the Kumasi metropolis on Friday 9thJune, 2023, led by the city Mayor, Hon. Sam Pyne, embarked on a metro-wide commemorativetree planting exercise.

The metro-wide exercise which coincided with theAshanti Regional Tree Planting exercise saw a symbolic planting of some specialtree seedlings by the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Sam Pyne, Metro CoordinatingDirector, Mr. Francis Darko Dwira; and Hon. PatrickFrimpong at the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi.

Earlier, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, theAshanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah; and the Deputy Minister forLands and Natural Resources, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio planted their trees at the RoyalGolf Club.

In all, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, this yeartargets to plant some 200 trees of varied species in commemoration of the dayto restore Kumasi’s former accolade as the ‘Garden City of West Africa’ andalso to protect the nation’s forest cover in an attempt to protect theenvironment.

Hon. Sam Pyne in a speech said the tree plantingexercise was critical in enhancing environmental sustainability, beautifyingand protecting the environment, adding that, the KMA was working hard toaugment government’s agenda of afforestation, and to avert the emergencythreats posed by climate change.

He said most of the trees planted in the first andsecond editions of the Green Ghana Project in the Kumasi Metropolis survived,thus, the Assembly’s quest to continue the exercise to purify the air we breathand also beautify the City.

He hinted that some of the seedlings has beenpresented to the Metro Education Directorate for onward distribution to schoolswithin the Bantama Sub-Metro District Council of the Kumasi MetropolitanAssembly.

Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio in a statement mentioned thatthrough the overwhelming support of Ghanaians and residents of the nation, over30million trees have been planted since 2021 under the Green Ghana Project andcharged Ghanaians to make conscious efforts to nurture and grow the trees tomaturity.

He expressed appreciation, on behalf of the Presidentto His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Asanteman for their support inthe fight against galamsey and their desire to uplift the image of the AsanteKingdom.
