KMA AND ITS ROAD SAFETY PARTNERS ENGAGES NEWS EDITORS

TheKumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and its Road Safety Partners, BloombergInitiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), Vital Strategies and the NationalRoad Safety Authority (NRSA) on Wednesday 5th April, 2023 organiseda half-day workshop on Road Safety for selected News Editors in the KumasiMetropolis at the Golden Bean Hotel.

Theworkshop was organised with the overarching goal of training News Editors withthe outstanding track records in covering local issues related to publichealth, infrastructure, and municipal governance in order to reduce road crashfatalities in Kumasi and Beyond.  

The News EditorsWorkshop was also aimed at complementing the general road safety work withsafety news reports carried out by trained journalists.

Facilitatorsat the workshop were drawn from the BIGRS, NRSA, Police MTTD, DVLA, GhanaHighways Authority, Department of Urban Roads (DUR), BRRI and some selectedRoad Safety Advocates.

Topicsdiscussed included; Road Safety as a public health crisis, the Global Agendaand the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, Stay Alive mass media campaign(the role of news editors), different perspective of road safety stories(Solution Journalism) among others.

Facilitatorsincluded Dr Chris Oppong, Head of Emergency, KATH; Ing. Samuel Boamah Dankwah(Country Manager. BIGRS Ghana); Omar Jacob (Vital Strategies, Brazil);Alexander Ayatah, Ashanti Reg’l Head, NRSA and Mr. Randy Wilson, Head ofTransport Department, KMA.

Therewas an open forum where the News Editors shared their experiences,contributions and also asked questions.
