ON-STREET DRIVERS ASSOCIATION CALLS ON KUMASI MAYOR

He indicated that the on-street system came about as a result of the construction of the Phase 1 of the Kejetia-Central Market Redevelopment project which initially used to be a lorry station and was able to accommodate large number of commercial cars.

He mentioned that the activities of the on-street drivers have now resulted in congestion and poor sanitation in the Central Business District (CBD). He explained that the drivers have now abused the number of slots that were allocated to them and that has resulted in the congestion in the CBD.

He advised the drivers to employ at least two cleaners to keep the place tidy and pay them. Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi also entreated them to adhere to the new transport fares and directed that they should all join recognized unions.

The Mayor explained that in joining recognized unions, the Assembly will obtain data of the drivers which will facilitate the issuance of stickers.

He cautioned that itis not safe to create congestion around health facilities and around financial institutions as well as around electricity power stations. 

He also cautioned that drivers who flout the KMA by-laws during the peak hours of the day will face the full rigors of the law.

The Mayor concluded by promising that he will visit all the on-street stations very soon to interact with the drivers and to also assess the situation on the ground.
