KMA DESILTS WAEC STORM DRAIN

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has embarked on a desilting exercise of the Waec storm drain near Akwatia Line with the help of inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons.

According to the Environmental Health Unit, any time it rains plastics and polythene are washed into the drains and close to the culvert that is supposed to carry the storm water across the road to the other end, and so consistently the KMA has to be removing these plastics.

Mr. Kwaku Poku, Head of the Unit noted that upon a recent instruction by the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, and a subsequent provision of an excavator they embarked on the desilting exercise.

He said there are a lot of activities that go on along the drain such as rice millers who dump the husk into the drain and also livestock sellers whose feed are washed into the drain when it rains, adding that, some people also dump refuse along the drain which are also washed into the drain when it rains.

The head of the Unit explained that currently the KMA has fabricated a mesh which is fixed at the extreme end of the drain to ensure that when it rains the refuse does not get closer to the road which creates some kind of eye saw to the general public.

Mr. Kwaku Poku noted that going forward the Unit and NADMO intends to engage all those plying their trade along the drain to sensitize them on the need to stop dumping into the drains and also serve as watchdogs to ensure people do not dump into the drains especially at night.

He noted that the KMA also intends to arrest and prosecute any one caught dumping into the drains.
