80TH REMEMBRANCE DAY MARKED IN KUMASI
Kumasi joined the rest of the world to celebrate the gallant military personnel who participated in the First and Second World Wars at the Cenotaph Square, Adum on Tuesday 11th November, 2025.
The event started at 10:13am with the parade by Ghana Army, Immigration Service, Police Service, Fire Service, Prison Service and army veterans.
The dignitaries present were, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of KMA, Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI who represented the King of Ashanti, and Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto.
Others were General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Central Command, Brigadier General Sison Ogaja, Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator Captain (rtd) Kwame Jabri, Ashanti Regional Prisons Commander, DDP Ing. James B. Mwinyelle and Regional Chairman of Veterans Ex-WO 1 George Appiah.
The Remembrance Day, formerly Armistice Day is celebrated on the 11th Hour of the 11th Day and of the 11th Month each year to remember and honour army personnels who fought gallantly for peace during World War I and II.
On this day, globally, it is marked to appreciate the sacrifices and toils of these fallen heroes deployed during peace keeping duties and also to show gratitude to those currently in the security services.
Significantly, a 2-minute silent observation in remembrance of the fallen heroes.
As part of the celebration, artificial poppies are sold to raise funds for the disabled and hospitalized.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, laid the first wreath on behalf of the President and the people of Ghana.
Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, the representative of the King of Asanteman, laid the second wreath on behalf of the Asanteman.
Brigadier General Sison Ogaja was the third to lay a wreath on behalf of the security service.
The fourth and last wreath was laid by Ex-WO 1 George Appiah, on behalf of the Veterans and VAG.
After the wreath laying, the celebrants were treated to poetry recital and cultural displays from the Kumasi Cultural Center, adding additional colour to the event.
