WASTE PICKERS RECEIVE LOGISTICS AND TRAINING FOR THEIR WORK UNDER THE HORESD PROJECT

Ninety (90) Waste Pickers from Ohwim, Duase and Sokoban in Kumasi have received logistics and undergone training on Personal Safety protocols from the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development (HORESD) Project on Wednesday 25thOctober, 2023 at the Forecourt of the KMA.

The logistics includes branded T-Shirts, hand gloves, picking sticks and nose masks. The 90 waste pickers were also oriented on safety ways to avoid contamination and diseases such as cholera, typhoid among others as they embark on their day-to-day activities.

Opening the event, Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Samuel Pyne said the presentation of the logistics and the training were to help the waste pickers adapt to contemporary ways of picking waste and also aid them in avoiding contaminations.


He noted that during the durbar to launch the Competition for waste Pickers on Friday 5th May, 2023, he promised the waste pickers that they would be supplied with equipment like gloves, nose masks, and picking sticks to enable them effectively execute waste segregation at the community level, which he was fulfilling today.

Hon. Sam Pyne entreated the waste pickers to contribute their quota in ensuring the success and sustainability of the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development Project in the Kumasi Metropolis.

Mrs. Paqui Momparler, the new President of Manra in Spain, in a brief speech said she was elated to see how keen the waste pickers were collaborating with the Project.


She encouraged them to do their best in ensuring the success of the project and was optimistic that their efforts will go a long way to benefit not only Kumasi but the Globe as a whole.

Hon. Samuel Pyne took the pickers through how to handle the picking sticks whiles Dr. Miriam Appiah-Brempong, a consultant to the Project from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)took them through personal safety protocols such as hand washing with soap after work, proper ways of wearing nose masks, gloves and protective glasses.

The waste pickers were later presented with the logistics to support their work.
