KUMASI MARKS 41ST FARMERS’ DAY

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly marked the 41ST Farmers’ Day Celebration at Amanfrom CPC in the Bantama Sub-Metro District Council on Friday December 5th, 2025 under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future”.

In his maiden speech at the event, Mayor of Kumasi Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi said the theme for this year’s anniversary was timely because it reminds Ghanaians that feeding the nation is both an economic obligation and a national security priority.

 

He added that it urges Ghanaians to eat what we produce, reduces dependency on imports, and builds a resilient agricultural system for future generations.

Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi emphasized that the Government led by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has set a decisive policy course that prioritize agriculture as a central pillar of national progress and transformation. He said the Feed Ghana Programme underscores that commitment which aims to expand production, enhance irrigation, support mechanization, strengthen extension services, improve soil fertility, and promote agro-industrial development.

He noted that the Department of Agriculture in the Kumasi Metropolis has made notable progress in boosting food production and also supporting farmers. He said agriculture activities including crop, ruminant, poultry and fish production have thrived in operational areas such as Daban, Bantama, Amanfrom, Santasi and Nhyiaeso.

He explained that over 1,920 registered farmers have received grants, training, and access to improved agricultural technologies. Additionally, he said Extension officers have conducted over 720 field visits, reaching 7,891 farmers, and increased vegetable yields by 12% in key areas which includes Amanfrom, 

 

Furthermore, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi said innovative initiatives such as container gardening has also empowered households to participate in urban agriculture.

The Kumasi Mayor noted that the KMA has also strengthened collaboration with stakeholders along the agricultural value chain including processors, markets, and agro-input suppliers, he said market price data collection has facilitated informed decision-making, while partnerships with institutions such as Amanfrom Camp and Kumasi Central Prisons has expanded productive agricultural ventures,

Concluding his speech, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi said the KMA through the Agric Department will intensify farmer registration, provide technical assistance, establish demonstration fields, and coordinate with value-chain actors to ensure sustained growth and support the Feed Ghana Programme.

The chairman for the occasion Nana Kwaku Baafi (Otumfuo Nantiahene) in his remarks applauded the KMA for organizing the event at Amanfrom. He called on the Government not to forget them when the national cake is being shared.

 


The awards for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly were in thirteen (13) categories namely Metro Best Crop farmer, Metro Best Female farmer, Metro Best Poultry farmer, Metro Best SHS in Practical Agriculture, Metro Best JHS in Practical Agriculture, and Metro Best Primary school in Practical Agriculture.

Others include Metro Best Agro-processing group, Metro Best Livestock farmer, Metro Best Differently-Abled farmer, Metro Best Agro Input dealer, Metro Best Departmental Staff, Metro Best Faith Based Organization, and the Overall Metro Best Farmer.

 

The Overall Metro Best Farmer award was presented to Amanfrom Camp Prisons which received a certificate, tricycle, 4 Knapsack Sprayers, 15 Cutlasses, 8 Wellington Boots, 12 liters of Weedicides, 10 bars of Key soap, 5 bags of Fertilizer and 6 Liquid fertilizers. 

Other winners included St. Hubert SHS for Metro Best SHS in practical Agriculture, Mr. Alfred Addo Tweneboah as Best Crop Farmer, Oasis Christian Academy as Best Primary school in practical agriculture, and Mr. Oscar Obeng as Metro Best Departmental staff.

In attendance were members of Metsec, Departmental heads at KMA, staff, school children, market women, farmers and the general public.
