The Mayor of Almere, Mrs. Annemarie Jorritsma has paid a three-day working visit to Kumasi.

The city of Almere in the Netherlands has a sister-city relationship with Kumasi aimed at sharing ideas, knowledge and challenges faced in urban governance to improve upon the lives of their people.

Mayor Annemarie was accompanied by a high-level three-member delegation which included Mr. Paul Mulder, the International Co-ordinator, Kumasi-Almere, Mr. Pieter Van Derlinden, Project Co-ordinator (a Dutch NGO) and Mrs. Marianne Hop, a Board Member of Samen Werk Foundation.

Some key highlights of Mayor Annemarie's visit were  a courtesy call on the deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Yaw Adusei at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), who stood in for the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Kojo Bonsu who had travelled out of the country on official assignment, visit to the Nhyieso Sub-metro office, tour of Sokoban Wood village and inauguration of 20-seater toilet facility at King Faisal Basic School at New Suame.

At the RCC Hon. Samuel Yaw Adusei commended Almere for supporting Kumasi in the areas of sanitation and education.

He called for cultural ties between the two cities and co-operation in other areas as well as to share ideas and transfer of knowledge for the betterment of their people.

Responding, Mrs. Annemarie, who had earlier inspected a guard of honor mounted by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) City Guards at the forecourt of the RCC, said Kumasi, was the only city in Africa Almere had a sister-city relationship with.

She also said Ghana was a good example of political stability in Africa and hoped the cordial relationship would continue for the mutual benefit of the two cities.

Among the personalities present at the meeting were Mr. Kofi Asubonteng, the Chief Director at the RCC, Mr. Solomon Asiedu, the Metro Coordinating Director of KMA and Hon. Nana  Kofi Senya, the Presiding Member of the KMA.

At the Nhyiaso Sub-metro office there was a presentation on the profile of Sub-metro office created in 2007. There was a second presentation on Local Government Capacity-Building an area city of Almere is assisting KMA to improve.

At the King Faisal basic school in new Suame where a mini durbar of pupils and staff as well as parents and guardians was held in honor of the visiting Almere Mayor.

Alhaji Ishaq Kuwait, the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam who chaired the function expressed his gratitude to the government of Netherlands, Almere city and Samen Werk Foundation whose collaborative efforts made it possible for the construction of the 20-seater modern toilet facility.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Adusei who was present at the function said government is  making  efforts to provide and make toilet facilities available and accessible to many Ghanaians "so that they don't go around easing themselves anywhere".

He called on staff and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the school to take good care of the toilet facility to make it last long.

Mayor Annemarie on her part said sanitation was very important for the health of children hence the decision to build a toilet for the king Faisal school.

She encouraged the pupils, especially the girls to study hard to enable them become professional teachers, nurse and in other chosen careers.

The Presiding Member of the KMA Hon. Nana Kofi Senya who is also the Assembly member for the area called on staff of the school to cultivate the culture of maintenance and maintain good sanitation practices to keep the facility in good shape.

The 20-seater toilet facility was later jointly inaugurated by Hon. Samuel Adusei and Mayor Annemarie.
