
KEJETIA PROJECT SET TO BE HANDED OVER TO KMA BY AUGUST
Residents of Kumasi will soon heave a sigh of relief as the phase 1 of the Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project which is about 95 percent complete is scheduled to be completed by the end of August this year.
The Project Director of Contracta Engeharia LTDa , the Brazilian construction firm executing the project, Mr. Jorge Javares de Almera disclosed this during the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development inspection tour of the project to see the progress of work and challenges confronting the project.
He said upon completion, the Kejetia project would be handed over to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the phase 2 and phase 3 of the redevelopment project would commence at the main Kumasi Central Market.
Court cases and injunctions delayed the execution of the project which was initially scheduled to be completed in January 2018.
The Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi thanked the Committee for the inspection tour and also commended Contracta for work done so far.
He was hopeful that the completion of the Kejetia Project would ease both human and vehicular traffic and congestion in the Central Business District of the City.
Hon. Osei Assibey said that the Assembly had data of all traders who were occupying the Kejetia Terminal and gave the assurance that all shop owners at the old Kejetia Terminal would have their shops back upon completion of the project.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, who shared his impressions after the visit said the committee members were impressed with the progress of the work done and assured the KMA and Contracta that the Committee will do all it could to ensure the successful completion of the project.
