JICA CONSULTANT LAUDS KUMASI ROAD PROJECT PREPARATIONS, CONSTRUCTION IMMINENT
A consulting team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has praised preparatory works on the Santasi Roundabout to Asokwa Interchange dual carriageway project.
The team commended the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for clearing the right of way, creating adequate space for contractors to assess and execute the project designed to reduce traffic congestion.
The delegation, led by Ing. Maud Gbeckor-Kove, Development Engineer at the Department of Urban Roads, first called on the Mayor of Kumasi on Monday before inspecting the project site.
JICA’s Chief Consultant, Mr. Junichiro Ogawa, informed the Mayor that contractor selection would begin under the Japanese Government once the inspection of preparatory works proves satisfactory.
Mr. Ogawa expressed satisfaction with progress on land clearing, utility relocation, and stakeholder engagement. He acknowledged the KMA and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for their pivotal roles in the preparatory phase.
“Once the contractor mobilizes to site, construction will start in earnest and proceed nonstop to completion,” Mr. Ogawa assured, adding that JICA-Ghana will conduct a final site inspection and submit a report to advance the project.
The dual carriageway aims to ease gridlock between Santasi, Asokwa, and Ahodwo — three major commercial hubs in Kumasi.
The Mayor of Kumasi conveyed the city’s and the Asantehene’s eagerness for the project to begin, urging the Government of Japan to ensure its successful delivery.
“This project is long overdue. About 98% of Kumasi residents are ready to see this dual carriageway completed,” the Mayor said.
He added that motorists, workers, students, and traders who use the route daily have endured severe rush-hour traffic and are keen for the road to be dualized.
JICA will fund the project under the Ghana-Japan bilateral cooperation agreement. Timelines and contractor details will be announced after the final site handover.
