The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA),

 has begun demolishing temporary structures and trees along the Santasi Roundabout to Asokwa Interchange stretch ahead of the construction of a dual-carriage road.

The exercise, started on Monday, June 15, 2026, and aimed at clearing the right of way to pave the way for the major road upgrade.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, led a joint team of KMA officials, city engineers, and security personnel to supervise the demolition.

The team pulled down wooden kiosks, bill boards, metal containers, trees, and makeshift stalls that had encroached on road reservations.

According to the Mayor, the demolition forms part of preparatory works for the much-anticipated dualisation of the Santasi-Asokwa corridor.

 

Upon completion, the road will ease traffic congestion and improve travel time for thousands of commuters who use the route daily.

"We served prior notices to all affected occupants and gave them enough time to relocate".

“This road is critical to Kumasi’s development. We cannot allow unauthorised structures to delay a project that will benefit the entire city”, Hon. Boadi stated

The KMA says the demolition will continue in phases over the coming weeks.

The Assembly has also cautioned traders and artisans not to return to the cleared areas, warning that offenders will be prosecuted.

Residents and motorists have long complained about heavy traffic, especially during peak hours, along the Santasi-Asokwa stretch.

The new dual-carriage road is expected to reduce travel time between Santasi, Ahodwo, Asokwa, and the Central Business District once completed.
