The Metropolitan Physical Planning Department is the Department responsible for ensuring the orderly and sustainable development of all human settlements within the Accra Metropolis.

Core Functions and Responsibilities

·         Development Permitting: Receive and Process all Departmental, Private and Non-governmental Building Plans before construction to ensure compliance with Planning Standards.

·         Land-Use Planning: Prepare Spatial and Land-use Plans to guide the future Development of Land in the Metropolis.

·         Settlement Improvement: Prepare Layouts for better housing, slum upgrading and improve urban mobility, including decongestion exercises targeting illegal structures.

·         Policy Advisory: Advice the Assembly on National Physical planning policies, zoning compliance, Street Naming.

·         Development Control: Ensure the prohibition of the construction of New Buildings unless Building Plans submitted have been approved by the Assembly.

·         Demolishing Permitting: Advise and facilitate the demolition of dilapidated buildings and recovery of expenses incurred in connection with the demolition.

·         Control of Outdoor Advertising: Advise the Assembly on the siting of Bill Boards, Masts and ensure compliance with the decisions of the Assembly.

·         Acquisition of Landed Properties: Advise Assembly on the acquisition of landed property in the public interest.

·         Layout & Subdivision Approvals: Facilitate the Approval of housing layouts, subdivision of plots, and Settlements design.

·         Advertising Permitting: Process Applications for the Approval of Billboards, Masts, and ensure compliance with Assembly Decisions.
